@Sebastian: Forgive me for not foaming at the mouth over Wave, but part of the charm of services like Twitter is their simplicity, the fact that they're designed for one thing (the quick spread of short bursts of information, to continue with the Twitter example) and they do it with a certain poise. Wave, on the other hand, is like the expensive washing machine sitting in my laundry room with all the buttons on it - it sits on "normal wash" 100% of the time.

There are uses for Wave, sure, but I just can't see myself building it into my current workflow at this point in time.

You are all delightfully missing the point... :P

Wave replaces a lot of other services. It aggregates. For want of an easy example, it's like Metaplace, only 2D. It's like... an embodiment of the Web, in one service.

I'm sure you've all seen the 90-minute tech demo, so I won't preach too much.

Currently it's only really useful to developers (like me). If you understand the possibilities of robots and gadgets then you should be fairly wet in the pants at the idea of Wave hitting the mass-market.

And it's open source! You can replace every forum on the web with this thing. Every blog. No more cobbled-together shit. It's simply a medium for communication -- something we've always lacked. Email doesn't cut it. MSN doesn't cut it. Twitter doesn't cut it. So we join them all together.

Wave will fix that -- which is basically what they said during the tech demo: 'What if email was invented today, instead of all those decades ago?'

You geeks should be ashamed of yourself! Wave should have you dribbling like delirious loons!

I haven't even bothered to check out Google Wave because personally, I think the last thing we need right now is yet another social networking app!

Although I do tend to love everything Google. So who knows. Maybe when it becomes a bit more polished I'll give it a looky-see.

@Randy: Actually, I was blissfully unaware of Insight until you pointed it out. So much for that parody of a product name. :P

@nicopolitan: Google Wave is a web-based application. There's nothing to install as long as you have a recent web browser.

Balls. I was looking for something aggregat-astic, but if like you say, I can get by with what I already have (Google Apps included) and that Wave may just be consumer-bent... I guess I really can skip over this.

But one can't help be curious, I guess. Once it comes out of beta (or rather, when it goes public, since Gmail was in beta since, like, the French Revolution), I guarantee people will download it for no reason other than to see what it's like.

After reading this, though, I'll probably be one of the first to uninstall it, too.
